The region around Antares in the Scorpion up to the somewhat discreet star Rho Ophiuchi is filled with gas and dust. The giant Antares, as a star of the spectral class M1, illuminates the surrounding clouds in its typical orange-red light, while ρ Ophiuchi illuminates it pale blue due to its much higher temperature. In between, there are dark nebulae, which conceal the light of the stars behind it.
