At a distance of 16 mio light years NGC 5128 (or Centaurus A) is probably one of the best known galaxies in the southern sky and the closest radio source (extends 8-10 degrees or 1.5 mio light years). There are various discussions in the scientific community as to what type this galaxy is: is it a ring galaxy, an elliptic galaxy or an lenticular type. The broad bent dust band with its visible star-forming regions suggests that NGC 5128 once collided with another galaxy. According to scientific findings, this would also explain the extended spindle-shaped halo, which measures a multiple of the central area.
