NGC 1097 is a barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Fornax, approximately 53 million light-years away. The diameter of the disk is approximately 148,000 light years. The larger of the two spiral arms is fragmented towards the end and pierced by the companion galaxy NGC 1097A (according to research findings, the dust structure actually has a hole here). The galaxy also has four stellar streams, two of them are visible in this image. Significantly more exposure time would be needed to show all four clearly—they would cross the galaxy like a large X.
