Shapley 1 (or RCW 100) is a planetary nebula in the constellation Norma. As its name suggests, this planetary nebula was discovered by Harlow Shapley in 1936 - making it a relatively young object. Shapley 1 forms a delicate ring, hence its nickname, the “Fine Ring Nebula.” Its average expansion velocity is approximately 25 km/s, and it is estimated to be about 7,800 years old. The description of how such a ring is formed is also fascinating.
