The Vela supernova was a nearby stellar explosion that occurred several thousand years ago, approximately 290 parsecs away in the southern constellation Vela. In this supernova, an intensely radiant neutron star, the Vela Pulsar, was formed from the core of the progenitor star. The gases ejected during the explosion form the ever-expanding, cloud-like Vela supernova remnant, which has now grown to about 40 parsecs in size and is one of the largest structures in the sky.
